At least 28 Gauteng pupils are receiving ARV treatment after a pupil brought syringe needles to school to prick 28 schoolmates.

At least 28 pupils in Gauteng have been put on treatment after a grade four pupil brought unidentified syringe needles to school.

The learners have been placed on anti-retroviral treatment PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis), as a preventative measure from contracting HIV or any other illness.

We don't know what kind of diseases they may have been exposed to.

Thando Kubheka, EWN reporter

It's understood that a pupil from Mooifontein Primary School brought the syringe needles to school last week.

It's believed the young child took the syringes from home and used them to prick her peers with the help of three other friends, reports EWN's Thando Kubheka.

The Gauteng Education Department says the parents were informed as soon as the school was altered to what happened.

At least one parent has opened a case of negligence against a relative of the child and police are investigating.

It's reported that some of the children have had adverse reactions to the medical treatment.

The syringes have been taken to the laboratories for testing.

Take a listen to the EWN update:
