Business in Africa: The rising interest in art

Ambassador Advisory's Refilwe Moloto says the rising interest in art over the past decade cannot be overestimated -particularly from an aesthetic perspective.

Populations have become more expressive and the world more receptive to our voice as the Parisian and even the launch of the Zeitz MOCAA and the continued growing success of the FNB Joburg Art Fair (now in its 10th year) demonstrate adds Moloto.

She goes on to say that historically, though, it has been the luxury of the super-rich. In the past 5 to 7 years, in Africa more so as a latecomer with a more democratised source of artwork, this sector has become demystified.

The Cape Town Art fair sought to do just this. The Zeitz names amongst its goals the same. Countries such as the DRC and Kenya have long fostered their artistic sectors, and they’re coming to the fore.

African art is also being increasingly centred in the mainstream: Mam Esther Mahlangu’s just had a boulevard painted in her honour in New York this week, Louis Vuitton recently made the Lesotho blankets “trend”, several years after the Kenyan Masai cloth scarves AND the Ghana must Go bags.
