SA's treasure trove of literature: Mtsikiza and more

With Heritage Day around the corner, Karabo Kgoleng reflects on the treasure trove of South African literature produced over the years.

She shares a few publications from the Johannesburg Review of Books and it's long line of classical books.

Reading an excerpt from Todd Matshikiza's Chocololates for My Wife, Kgoleng describes how books are an object of art.

Matshikiza is better known for his musical composition for the infamous jazz opera, King Kong. In the book, Matshikiza, who also worked on Drum magazine during the fifties, gives an account of his journey to London with the cast and his family.

He speaks about black life in the Johannesburg - Orlando, Sophiatown and Alexandra when King Kong was in rehearsal. He writes about this in contrast to his family life in London..... it's hilarious.

Kgoleng's list includes The long road: The Tunnel ,a collection of poems by Zinjiva Winston Nkondo.

The reason why I mention his book is that he was one of the lesser-known struggle veterans. A place where I found a lot of this history from was the SA history website.
