The Information Regulator plans to raise awareness around law regulating how personal information is stored and processed - known as the Protection of Personal Information Act.
The regulator is being set up to monitor and enforce compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act which is expected to come into effect in its entirety by 2018.
Information Regulator chair, Advocate Pansy Tlakula says once the Act is operational, people's information may only be processed with the consent of an individual.
The regulator’s priority is to outline a standard code of practice for call centres and telemarketing groups she says.
The penalties are quite high for defying and violating the act.

Companies are not allowed to process personal information for direct marketing purposes without consent. Fines for transgressions may not exceed R10 million.
