National anthem renditions: when it goes horribly wrong

We had a laugh when our listeners called in to CapeTalk and 702's Redi Tlhabi Show, to vote for the winner of the worst version of a national anthem. The contenders? Ras Dumisani and Jamie Foxx.

Both men have received strong criticism for their anthem renditions performed during national sporting events, representing their respective countries.

Ras Dumisani takes on Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika

The reggae singer was accused of destroying the national anthem when the Springboks played France in a rugby test match in 2009. The musician was blamed by some South Africans for the Springboks 20-13 defeat, although he insisted that it was a beautiful rendition and went on to release a reggae version of the anthem in 2010.

Were our boys really upset by the off-key anthem, or did the public beat Dumisani up for nothing?

Jamie Foxx vs The Star-Spangled Banner

Before the start of what was dubbed 'the fight of the century' between boxers Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, American entertainer, Jamie Foxx led Las Vegas' MGM Grand Theatre in a unique version of the United States national anthem on Sunday.

Some say the real fight wasn't between Mayweather and Pacquiao, but rather Jamie Foxx vs the national anthem. Would you agree?

On Tuesday, Foxx went on the Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss the controversy around his arena performance this past weekend. He says the reason he sounded slightly off key was because his inner ear (the ear piece used singers during live events) was not secured in. He continued to say that he "killed it" in the arena space, but that it didn't quite translate the same way in the broadcast.

Our listeners weigh in on the worst

Many of our listeners felt very strongly about this issue and were quite opinionated about who, of the two gentlemen, sang their anthem the worst.

Also, listen to Ras Dumisani's recent interview with 702's Xolani Gwala, where he gave the national anthem another brave attempt:
