'Tom Petty was still very hot, his death was so unexpected'

US rock legend Tom Petty died on Monday evening. Petty was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica hospital after being found unconscious in his Malibu home but was unable to be revived.

Music guru Sean Brokenshaw chatted to John Maytham about the Heartbreakers frontman who had iconic hits like 'Break Down' and 'Free Falling'.

Brokenshaw says Petty's death was very unexpected.

He was still on the concert tour, there were all sorts of gigs planned.

The last album he released in 2014 'Hypnotic Eye', debuted at No.1 on the Billboard charts.

So he was hot, the guy was still very hot.

He represents one of those artists who was the bridge between the old and the new. Because he grew up influenced by Elvis, the Beatles, and The Rolling Stones.

He met Elvis Presley as a young boy and decided he wanted to be a rock star, says Brokenshaw.

He dropped out of school at age 17 and started his first band.

He was a great singer, composer and songwriter.

It was only shyness that prevented him from becoming a luminary solo performer.

Brokenshaw he was a man of great conscience and principle.
