The MEC for Education in the Western Cape, Debbie Schäfer, announced a decision to close down Uitzig High School from the beginning of 2018.
The school has been plagued by vandalism and theft, says Schäfer. WCED has been spending money to have the learners taught in mobile classrooms with mobile toilets which are paid for on a month-to-month basis.
She says the enrollment numbers have dwindled in the last four years from 460 to 94. Some of the learners have already been moved from Uitzig to Ravensmead High School and Schäfer says they haven't had any complaints.
The report I had is that the learners who have been moved there are well integrated. It is a very good school and the results are excellent.— Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC
It's not like we are sending them to an awful school but they are at a school that's been performing really well.— Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape Education MEC
