Acting Director at Western Cape Health Department, Dr Wayne Smith says measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of emergency services workers who have faced numerous attacks over the past years.
On Wednesday, a man who robbed an EMS worker of his cellphone in Khayelitsha was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court.
Smith says the department welcomes the court's ruling.
We have adopted a concept along with other colleagues from the Department of Community Safety and Law Enforcement, so we kind of sat around and looked at the problem that includes putting EMS controllers into the transport management centre.— Dr Wayne Smith, Acting Director at Western Cape Health Department
It's a very much proactive approach ... We are hoping we are able to turn the corner. The number of cases have dropped from about 6 two years ago to about 3. I think we can even mobilise the community to assist us further.— Dr Wayne Smith, Acting Director at Western Cape Health Department
He encourages members of the community to come forward with information.
