2001: Martin Bailie reflects on the terrorist attacks of 9/11

This October, CapeTalk is celebrating its 20th birthday by reliving some of the most impactful stories of the past twenty years, as told by some of our favourite personalities.

CapeTalk's programme manager Tessa van Staden was studying in New York on the day that the twin towers fell - and got there in time to watch the South Tower collapse.

The streets of Manhattan were empty. Eerily empty ... The whole island seemed in shock.

The terror attacks of 9/11 had a far-reaching, long-lasting effect, and for journalists across the globe - including the legendary Martin Bailie - it was the biggest story of 2001.

In conversation with Kieno Kammies, former Breakfast host Bailie recalls being at CapeTalk's sister station 702 when the second tower came down.

And suddenly, what everybody had assumed was an accident, became something very different.

Days after the September 11 terrorist attack, fires still burn amidst the rubble of the World Trade Center.

The mood changed dramatically. There was shock.

But it's a newsroom. The shock was for a very, very short space of time. And then people started to pick up phones ... The search then was for information.

Bailie was only due to go on air the morning after the attacks, but he made sure to make notes as the day unfolded. He still has opening words from the morning of September 12.

It was like watching a movie.

Nothing was ever going to be the same again.
