Architect at Paragon Group, Hugh Fraser joined 702 anchor, Azania Mosaka for a discussion on the recent development and transformation Sandton City is undergoing.
Fraser says Johannesburg is essentially an American city, adding that it viewed itself as the New York of Africa.
"One of the cities in the world that has the best modern movement architecture in the world is actually Springs, in Ekurhuleni", explains Fraser.
He says the art deco buildings have managed to survive this long in Springs because there hasn't been the move Johannesburg has experienced to knock down buildings that are 'two minute old'.
Sandton has been very interesting in that particularly beautiful buildings have come up and even more than that, for example on the Alice Lane precinct, its been enclosed to introduce some of the public space back into the city.— Hugh Fraser, Architect at Paragon Group
Fraser explains that there are a number of worldwide systems that rate how green buildings are which is primarily about energy.
Johannesburg has always been known for its architecture but will always be tempered by apartheid says Fraser.
Sandton is highly respected by the rest of Africa. People who come from other African countries are always wowed by the architecture.— Hugh Fraser, Architect at Paragon Group
It is definitely the trend setting city on the continent.— Hugh Fraser, Architect at Paragon Group
