#KZNStorm: 2 die at govt hospital, death toll now at 7

DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department has confirmed that two patients were killed at a state hospital when a wall collapsed during Tuesday's severe thunderstorms.

It brings the confirmed number of deaths to seven.

Among those killed, is an eight-year-old girl who was struck by lightning and a 12-year-old boy who drowned.

With traffic flowing in most parts of the province, disaster management teams continue with rescue operations for those affected by flash floods.

The heavy rains are now moving through the northern parts of KZN.

The Cooperative Governance Department's Lennox Mabaso said: “Those in flooded areas we’re also alerting them, we basically want to save lives and avoid any loss of life at this stage.”

KZN Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo says the latest victims were a mother and daughter who were leaving the hospital.

“We regret the loss of two lives at the Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital after the daughter was discharged. A wall fell on them and they died on the spot.”

AMBULANCE SERVICES OVERSTRETCHED Dhlomo is warning ambulance services are currently overstretched and might not be able to respond to all emergency calls.

He said: “We also want to request that because we’re overstretched by the ambulance services, we may not be able to really respond to all calls. So if people could make use of any other alternative transport if they need to go to hospital, we’d definitely appreciate that.”

The Addington and Clairwood hospitals had parts of their roofs blown off by strong winds during the heavy downpours.

Major rescue operations continue along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline affected by Tuesday’s heavy thunderstorms.

The National Sea Rescue Institute says due to the strong winds and heavy rains many yachts and boats have been washed up on the shoreline at various harbours.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said: “The NSRI teams are assisting emergency services in the Durban area. It’s a massive deployment of emergency services.
