EFF may have to prove expelled councillors voted with the ANC

On Thursday, the High Court in Pretoria heard an application by six expelled Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors to stop the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) removing them from the Mogale City Municipality.

The EFF leadership decided to sack six of its nine councillors after they defied the party’s decision and voted with the ANC during the municipality’s budget on 1 July this year.

EWN reporter, Gia Nicolaides says the expelled councillors attended a meeting on the budget, after being requested not to do so by the EFF.

We've seen a lot of drama in Mogale City. We've seen the mayor changing three times since the local municipal elections last year. Now we have an ANC mayor when it was initially a DA mayor.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

The DA and the EFF along with two other opposition parties are a coalition government and have stuck together and that's why the EFF took a strong stance to expel the councillors.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Nicolaides reports that the councillors wanted their names to be taken off the representation list and to oppose their expulsion from the Mogali Council on an urgent basis.

Their urgent application was dismissed.

I spoke to their lawyer who said they will file a new application on Friday reports Nicolaides.

The lawyer says the EFF needs to follow internal processes and cannot just expel them and also wants the party to prove that these six voted with the ANC.
