Reasons why you should travel to Maputo

Described as the hippest African capital, Maputo is seen as having a tropical attitude with a retro charm. The city in Mozambique has grown remarkably in the past decade. Some people call it Little Havana because of its heady mix of African and Portuguese, with lashings of French, Arab and Oriental influences.

It's got such a mix. French, Arab, Oriental, there's so many influencers there.

Theres been an explosion of galleries, bars, bistros, restaurants, clubs, coffee shops and street culture. The fact that it's on the Ocean and has a beautiful seaview makes this little city pretty charming.

There are a surprising number of hotels and guesthouses for a relatively small city. There is a diversity of places to stay for budget travellers like backpackers and B&Bs.

Mozaika is a fabulous option - a B&B in tropical gardens with a big fat mango tree and lovely bougainvillea. R1150 per room per night.

If you’re planning a special occasion, head for the Cardoso Hotel, which is a big friendly hotel with great city and sea views, easygoing vibe and good restaurant. R2000 plus a night.

Southern Sun Maputo is right on the beach front. It's an upmarket hotel with excellent accommodation and food. A central location on the beach front. R3000 plus a night.

There's a wonderful Bed and Breakfast I often stay. You're looking at about R1000 something a night per room so that's not a bad rate.
