SA drought may take its toll on food security - agricultural expert

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations proclaims that the large movements of people today presents complex challenges in terms of food security.

As the world commemorates World Food Day, CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies speaks to Dr Klaus Eckstein, Head of the Crop Science Division for Bayer.

Eckstein says there's a need for awareness and conversation to be had about food supply in midst of drought and continuous weather variations.

He says production factors are getting into limitations under the growing population which is a big challenge that needs to be addressed.

We have to talk about this things and create awareness...

Dr Klaus Eckstein, Head of the Crop Science Division for Bayer

Eckstein spoke about the Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) the technology that could assist in increasing productivity of food crops.

If we talk today about limitations in soil and the increase in food demand, we need to be aware that food productivity and food loss are the key drivers we need to face in our future.

Dr Klaus Eckstein, Head of the Crop Science Division for Bayer

We need to understand productivity of smallholder farmers which are about 500 million around the world, contributing to about 50% of the food supply.
