Mentally ill patients removed from NGO to make room for Life Esidimeni patients

As the hearings into Life Esidimeni continues, social worker Daphney Ndhlovu from Cullinan will be giving testimony on the 27 NGOss that the Health Ombudsman found to have been operating unlawfully.

Ndlhlovu works for the Cullinan Rehabilitation Centre where a high number of patients died.

EWN reporter Masego Rahlaga, reporting from the hearing, gives details of Ndlhovu's testimony.

According to Ndlhovu, when the patients were first moved they wanted to move 10 patients every two weeks to afford them time to adjust to the new environment.

But when they went for their first pick up, they were forced to collect 27 patients instead of the ten that was initially agreed upon.

She says the reason why they wanted to take ten patients every two weeks was so that the patients get used to the new environment and the new caregivers

She reports that eight patients were discharged from Cullinan when they should not have been, in order to make space for Esidimeni patients.

Of the 140 deaths, some of them were of the patients who were moved from NGOs where they were living to make space for Esidimini patients.
