South African word of 2017 is #StateCapture

For the first time, South Africa will get its own Word of The Year. As you may know, the Oxford Dictionary selects a word that they feel reflects the zeitgeist and mood of the moment in a particular year.

So for example last year the Word of the Year 2016 was 'post-truth' which is defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion that appeals to emotion.

On Monday, 16 October, the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) announced its SA Word of The Year which is #StateCapture

Dr Rakwena Mpho Monareng, CEO of the Pan South African Language Board says #StateCapture was selected as the South African word of the year based on a word that has been prominent in the country and captures the psychic of a nation from January to October.

He goes on to say social media networks and mainstream media was also scrutinised to how many times the word appeared in each medium and in determining the word being hailed the word of the year.

What is also important is we want that word captured in South African indigenous dictionaries.
