'SACP will not leave Cabinet because of one man'

On Tuesday morning, in an unseen move, President Jacob Zuma announced his eleventh cabinet reshuffle, axing South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary, Blade Nzimande as Higher Education and Training Minister.

The SACP then held a media briefing in response to the Cabinet reshuffle.

SACP national spokesperson Alex Mashilo, tells Afternoon Drive host, Bongani Bingwa that members of the SACP cannot walk out of Zuma's cabinet because they are there to serve the nation and not one man.

This is our Cabinet. We campaigned for the African National Congress (ANC) to win elections not for an individual.

Alex Mashilo, National Spokesperson, SACP

If you have a president who isn't willing to serve the people, surely it is better to have cabinet ministers who are willing to serve the people.

Alex Mashilo, National Spokesperson, SACP

Mashilo says the SACP will be convening a political bureau meeting which is an urgent meeting extended to members belonging to central committee.

He goes on to say, a press conference will be held soon to announce the organisations plan of action.

We cannot simply walk away from the alliance at the irritation of an individual. The struggle is not over which is why we'll be deepening and advancing it.

Alex Mashilo, National Spokesperson, SACP
