Speculation over Mahlobo's new top energy post just weeks after Russia gas trip

New Energy Minister David Mahlobo's recent travel itinerary is fueling speculation that the Cabinet reshuffle is a tactical move by President Jacob Zuma to see the nuclear deal through.

Energy expert Chris Yelland says he is astounded by the appointment of Mahlobo to the energy portfolio.

According to Yelland, Mahlobo does not have any experience or background in the energy sector.

Last month, Mahlobo reportedly joined controversial businessmen Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene on a trip to Russia to sell themselves as possible BEE partners in a R5-billion deal.

It's astounding that only a month ago Minister David Mahlobo was in Russia with Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene putting together a private oil deal. One month later he is the Minister of Energy.

It's believed Mahlobo has been a loyal confidant of Zuma for some years and Yelland says the public must connect the dots.
