New Energy Minister David Mahlobo says speculations should not be made over his latest appointment.
In the latest cabinet reshuffle announced on Tuesday, Mahlobo was given Mmamoloko Kubayi’s energy portfolio, with Bongani Bongo taking over State Security.
The appointment has heightened speculation that Zuma is trying to push through the nuclear deal with Russia before his term ends in 2019.
Mahlobo says his mandate is clear.
When I met the President in the morning, my mandate was very clear... one of the things we need to do is to ensure that there is a security of energy in this country and ensure that it is sustainable.— David Mahlobo, Energy Minister
Asked whether South Africa needs nuclear, Mahlobo had this to say:
Already nuclear is here in South Africa. We should not create a myth as if it is not there. We have nuclear here currently in Koeberg and that facility in Pretoria.— David Mahlobo, Energy Minister
We’re actually leading in terms of using nuclear isotopes so that we’re able to do advancements in terms of human sciences and contribution to health. We’re actually among the top six in the world.— David Mahlobo, Energy Minister
