Dudu Myeni gets kicked off SAA board

SAA chair Dudu Myeni has been removed from the board by President Jacob Zuma and will be replaced by JB Magwaza.

Aviation expert and editor at SA Flyer Magazine, Guy Leitch says the changes to the board came as a surprise but are good news.

This has indeed been a welcome surprise because under Dudu Myeni's leadership SAA has incurred unprecedented losses.

Guy Leitch, Aviation Expert and Editor at SA Flyer Magazine

Here is the list of the shake-up:

Removal

Dudu Myeni - Teacher
Tryphosa Mmakeaya - Accountant
Mzimkhulu Malunga - Journalist
Siphile Buthelezi - Legal
Nazmeera Moola - Investec
Gugu Sipamla- Journalism

Retaining

Swazi Tshabalala- Economics and Master in BAdmin
Peter Tshisevhe - Legal
Thandeka Mgoduso- Clinical psychology and HR
Pieter Maluleka - Leadership
Akhter Moosa - Accountant

Addition

JB Magwaza - Chair
Nolitha Fakude - Deputy chair
Geoff Rothschild - Business
Aviation expert - Ahmed Bassa
Tinyiko Mhlari - Accountant -( young)
Martin kingston - Business

According to reports, it was a consortium of private lenders that upped the pressure that resulted in the removal of Myeni from the SAA board.

Leitch says not a great deal is known about the incoming chairperson, Magwaza, except that he has been described as a veteran corporate executive and has served on numerous boards since the 1990s, including that of Anglo American.

He has got the gravitas, the experience, and skills to do a good job. There's no hint or whiff of scandal around him. He can only be an improvement on the current chair, Myeni.

Guy Leitch, Aviation expert and editor at SA Flyer Magazine

I am optimistic that we are seeing a substantial quality in the improvement of the board and hopefully the board will adopt a more hands-off approach to running the airline because there's been too much interference in the work of the CEOs in the past. We have seen four CEOs come and go in the past five years.

Guy Leitch, Aviation expert and editor at SA Flyer Magazine

Leitch says the new board needs to focus on the implementation of the turnaround plan. Many strategies have never implemented.

Too often politics have gotten in the way of implementations, particularly when it comes to difficult decisions like job cuts.

Guy Leitch, Aviation expert and editor at SA Flyer Magazine

What we need is a board that has the guts to stand up to interference from government and let the CEO get on with the job.
