2010: Aden Thomas recalls the 2010 World Cup euphoria

This October, CapeTalk is celebrating its 20th birthday by reliving some of the most impactful stories of the past twenty years, as told by some of our favourite personalities. Click here to view the rest of the stories.

On day one of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Aden Thomas was broadcasting from the top of one of Cape Town's famous red open-top buses.

After years of debate over South Africa's ability to host soccer's biggest event, the time had finally arrived, and the "doom and gloom crowd" were put firmly in their place, former Breakfast Show host Thomas recalled.

There was a sense of national pride that completely overshadowed what the naysayers had to say.

For four weeks, we got it bang spot on every time.

Fans of Bafana Bafana cheer the team from big screens outside the stadium at the 2010 World Cup opening match.

When thinking back, Thomas and this morning's Breakfast Show host Africa Melane could only think of three incidents that cast a shadowed on the World Cup: An England goal being disallowed, a traffic jam on the runways caused by VIP planes, and Paris Hilton's arrest for marijuana possession in Port Elizabeth.

That had nothing to do with us [and] our bad planning or inability to host an event.

Even crime came down that month, Thomas recalled.

It was the biggest jol this country has ever seen.

CapeTalk's studios were perfectly placed on the fan mile and Thomas recalled after-parties being staged in the building (sometimes without management's knowledge) after some evening events.

It was an incredibly good time to be a broadcaster, to be at CapeTalk, to be part of this national phenomenon of feel-good euphoria, jubilation and celebration.

The discussion was rounded out by a call from one of the heroes of that World Cup - former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth.
