The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is taking on the Guptas.
The Financial Times reports that that the investigations are looking at multi-million rand contracts the Guptas allegedly secured for Transnet suppliers. It is also being reported that the FBI will focus on Ashish and Amol Gupta, who are US citizens and nephews of Atul and Ajay Gupta.
EWN senior reporter, Barry Bateman says the FBI may have gained interest into Gupta linked businesses because of the #GuptaLeak emails that were made public by the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism and Scorpio.
The Financial Times has managed to establish that the focus of the investigation by the FBI is these two nephews of Atul and Ajay Gupta who are US citizens and reside in Texas.— Barry Bateman, EWN senior reporter
It was in July that the amaBhungane reported about this particular transaction that related to Transnet and how the Gupta acted as the facilitators of awarding a contract to a particular Swiss based crane company.— Barry Bateman, EWN senior reporter
Bateman explains that approximately R30 million was deposited from this particular company into a Gupta fund company in Dubai and that money was subsequently moved into the nephew's company account in the United States.
Bateman says it embarrassing that it is the FBI and not the Hawks who are investigating the Gupta family.
We have heard in Parliament that the Hawks are in fact investigating this matter but it falls part of the broader state capture investigation that they are investigating says Bateman.
He says for months there has been significant evidence of wrongdoing being made public but we've seen very little action from South African authority.
The only concrete action we've seen were the sanctions imposed on PR firm, Bell Pottinger, he adds.
Bateman also covered a post-Cabinet briefing in Pretoria on Thursday. He says newly appointed Communications Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi congratulated the new members of the South African Airways (SAA) and also spoke of the economy.
Kubayi said Cabinet was praised on Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba's assurances given to investors says Bateman.
