"Violence against the Rohingya muslims in Myanmar can be described as genocide"

After World War Two when the world realized the devastation of the acts perpetrated by the Nazis, we said ‘never again’.

Nelson Mandela, during his inauguration speech after the fall of Apartheid said ‘never again’.

Article Two of United Nations (UN) Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948, Genocide is defined as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”

The current violence meted out against the Rohingya muslims in Myanmar can only be described as genocide says Afternoon Drive host, Bongani Bingwa.

Bingwa spoke with Adv. Shabnam Mayet of Protect the Rohingya campaign about the situation in Myanmar.

The calling it ethnic cleansing because foreign government don't have actual legal recourse or obligation for them to intervene.

The reality is they are going to say that there is no access yet to Rakhine so the half a million Rohingya who are still trapped inside Rakhine international observers who are independent as well as UN observers have not had access to them to see what is going on inside.
