Mayor Herman Mashaba to approach the courts to deport undocumented immigrants

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba says that the City is seeking legal recourse to compel the Department of Home Affairs to act on illegal immigration in Johannesburg.

On Thursday Mashaba confirmed that his lawyers will launch a High Court application against newly appointed Home Affairs Minister Ayanda Dlodlo next week.

He says Home Affairs has a duty to provide immigrants with the necessary documentation.

The constitution of this country makes provision for Home Affairs to make sure these people are properly looked after, but for those who do not qualify, Home Affairs has got the Constitutional responsibility to ensure that these people are sent back.

Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg Executive Mayor

We need forward planning, we need to work with a responsible national government to ensure that as our people move into the cities as urbanisation happens, it happens in an orderly fashion. It is for that reason we cannot compound our problem by this porous open borders where you have more people with no documentation.

Herman Mashaba, Johannesburg Executive Mayor

This is part of Mashaba's plan to clean up the CBD in particular and reclaim buildings owned by the city.
