2014: Pippa Hudson reflects on the Shrien Dewani trial

This October, CapeTalk is celebrating its 20th birthday by reliving some of the most impactful stories of the past twenty years, as told by some of our favourite personalities. Click here to view the rest of the stories.

On 13 November 2010, newlywed couple Shrien and Anni Dewani were on honeymoon in Cape Town when their taxi was hijacked. Shrien and the driver were released, but Anni's body was found the next morning.

A few days later, Shrien flew back to the United Kingdom. It would take four years for him to be extradited to South Africa to stand trial, after hijacker Mziwamadoda Qwabe accused him of orchestrating the hit on his new bride.

2014 also marked afternoon presenter Pippa Hudson's first year on CapeTalk, and she recalls discussing the Shrien Dewani trial every day on her show.

I was covering it with nerves in my tummy and terror in my heart, which was my condition for most of that year.

Hudson and Breakfast Show presenter Kieno Kammies both recall feeling that something was odd about the circumstances surrounding the case.

It says so much about our crime issues and the state of our country that when she was found murdered but not raped, we suddenly start going 'Something doesn't add up here. There's more to this story than we thought'.

During the initial trials, details emerged of Shrien's sexuality and his engagement with escorts, leading to claims that he had orchestrated the hit on his new bride to free from an unwanted marriage.

However, in December 2014, High Court Judge Jeanette Traverso threw out the case against Shrien Dewani, citing insufficient evidence.

There are so many unanswered questions, and we will never know, because of course this case came crashing down midway.

We all have that lingering suspicion of what we think actually happened.
