'Sex addiction' does not exist (or excuse sexual abuse) - Dr Eve

There is a trend of sexual abusers, such as disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein, coming forward claiming to be addicted to sexual activity.

However, clinical sexologist Dr Eve argues that there is no such thing as sexual addiction.

In fact, sex addiction is not officially listed in the psychiatric bible of diagnosable disorders, the DSM-5.

Dr Eve says that using the incorrect label "sex addict" stigmatises anyone who deviates from the heteronormative model of sexuality.

Many people have feelings, urges and behaviors that don't fit into the heteronormative model of sexuality or acceptable sexual behaviour. They are shamed for that.

She advises that sex addiction has become a label reserved for privileged men to excuse and avoid responsibility for sexual misconduct.

She explains that out of control sexual behaviour is often about other psychological factors affecting individuals.

According to Dr Eve, some people use sex as an escape from addressing difficult feelings and mental thoughts.
