'Nzimande was removed because of calls for Zuma to step down'

He [Blade Nzimande] was removed… on the basis of calls for Zuma to step down, the issue of corruption and the relationship of the president with the Gupta family.

Solly Phetoe, Cosatu

The SACP and Cosatu agreed on Thursday that their alliance with the ANC is the weakest it has ever been.

The alliance partners met at a council meeting on Thursday.

They discussed the prerogative of the president, premiers and mayors to appoint and release members of Cabinet executive councils and mayoral committees.

They also stressed the importance of appropriate consultation and input from the alliance on strategic decisions.

Delegates expressed concerns about the ballooning debt levels and the need to treat workers’ assets in the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) with care.

The alliance also reconfirmed its commitment to the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry into state capture.

Ray White interviewed Cosatu North West Secretary Solly Phetoe.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

At the beginning it was tense, but not for a very long time.

Solly Phetoe, Cosatu

At the end we agreed there was a reaffirmation of the relevance and importance of the alliance.

Solly Phetoe, Cosatu

…Zuma is doing reshuffling without consultation…

Solly Phetoe, Cosatu

The meeting agreed that… there’s a need for the alliance to meet monthly…

Solly Phetoe, Cosatu

The issue about the reshuffling… we must discuss that matter, because it’s a pain to us as working class…

Solly Phetoe, Cosatu

The alliance relationship has gone down.
