This is according to a report released by National Income Dynamics Study (Nids) done on 28 000 individuals in 7 300 households.

The National Income Dynamics Study (Nids) in collaboration with researchers from UCT have found out 49% of South African are living just below the poverty line and 18% are chronically poor.

According to senior operations manager, Samantha Richmond, Nids interview 28 000 individuals in 7 300 households across the country annually to measure the quality of South Africans' lives.

They look at factors such as income and education levels and the availability of health services in order to create a picture of how South Africans are living.

What's really unique about this study is that we actually have hardcore evidence that things are not improving for many South Africans.

Samantha Richmond, senior operations manager

Its a discussion we need to have on what can we do differently becasue what we've been doing so far isn't working.
