Five drowning prevention tips at home or the beach

As the weather gets warmer and warmer, people try to find ways to cool down either by taking a swim at home or going to the beach.

Sadly, this is also the time when rescue services record a high number of drownings.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammmies spoke to Andrew Ingram, drowning prevention manager at National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) about some drowning prevention tips.

Here's what you should do according to the NSRI:

  • Make sure children are not unattended when they are near water
  • Make sure they are multiple barriers to water
  • Choose a beach where there are lifeguards and swim in between the flags
  • If you are looking after small children, you need to be within an arms length. You cannot be destructed by Facebook.
  • No alcohol
