President Donald Trump has since reacted to the killings, saying he has ordered more robust “extreme vetting” of travelers coming into the United States.

Ray White spoke to John Stremlau, head of the international relations department at Wits University.

Stremlau says Trump's reaction is of no help to the surge of terrorism in the US.

This is the anti-immigration tribalist demagoguery of Donald Trump which doesn't do anyone any good right now when you have societies that are in turmoil, where you have individuals who feel empowered and take action that may have been encouraged by a particular sector... but lets not start inditing people.

John Stremlau, Head of the international relations department at Wits University.

You have got to approach this in an enlightened and constructive way and look at the causes that lay behind this and the way that the United States has approached this is scaremongering.

John Stremlau, Head of the international relations department at Wits University.
