Meet Mteto Nyati (former MTN head), now CEO of iconic SA tech firm Altron

I grew up in a village outside of Mthatha.

Mteto Nyati, Altron

It [Altron] is a company ready for change.

Mteto Nyati, Altron

Mteto Nyati is the Chief Executive Officer at information and communication technologies firm Altron.

He joined the 52-year-old telecommunications company in April after a two-and-a-half year stint as CEO at MTN South Africa.

Prior to working at MTN, Nyati was at IBM for 12 years and at Microsoft for six.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Nyati for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it.)

My mother had a grocery shop that sold everything to our village… I had to get up at 4:30… When I look back… it was preparing me…

Mteto Nyati, Altron

The longest I’ve ever had a job was 12 years at IBM.

Mteto Nyati, Altron

Sometimes people come and bullshit you… you’re able to pick that up quickly, and address it.

Mteto Nyati, Altron

It was the longest process [being interviewed for Altron] I’ve ever been through.

Mteto Nyati, Altron

It was one of the problems the company had. It was led by technical people… That’s one of the changes I’m making… Bringing in people who are customer-centric.

Mteto Nyati, Altron

Altron used to be the pillar of strength… building transformers for Eskom… building decoders for MultiChoice…

Mteto Nyati, Altron

I want to make sure this company becomes relevant in South Africa.
