Former Democratic Alliance leader, Tony Leon has written an opinion piece titled: The Mbeki presidency looks like a golden age thanks to Zuma.
Given what was to follow, the Mbeki era now looks like a golden age of fiscal rectitude and state competence says Leon.
He says when former South African President, Thabo Mbeki held office, he wasn't personally corrupt to the best of knowledge and didn't run anyway from any criminal charges. Leon adds that under Mbeki, South Africa's fiscas was also properly run.
In that sense he had some competence and now we're in a different era. We're in an era of criminality and deep embedded corruption.— Tony Leon, former DA leader
Leon goes on to say Mbeki also had the ability to send stern warning to his party, the African National Congress (ANC) that if they don't self correct, they will self destruct the legacy of the organisation.
