[LISTEN] Stephen Grootes in conversation with Pali Lehohla

After 17 years at the helm of Stats SA, Statistician-General Pali Lehohla has officially vacated his post.

Lehohla joined Stats SA in the early 1980s.

Stephen Grootes spoke to Lehohla about some of his highlights, as well as the changing system over the years.

Speaking on the state of the country, Lehohla says the numbers have pointed to a difficult time.

I think one of the things we are not taking care of adequately, we have not actually studied the force of democracy and what it means for South Africa. We really have to look at the extent to which we have created adequate human resource capabilities to deal with the problems of the future.

Pali Lehohla, former Statistician-General

Where it counts the most, in tertiary and so on, while those numbers are increasing, the mortality is too high and its the mortality that counts the most...

Pali Lehohla, former Statistician-General

The numbers are not painting any glorious picture at all, so this is what should be keeping South Africans awake. Common sense can tell you all of us will die, but by when some die and others die is out of statistics so that we can plan in detail.

Pali Lehohla, former Statistician-General
