LISTEN: New SAA CEO says every decision must have commercial logic

Vuyani Jarana has finally begun his tenure as South African Airways (SAA) CEO. Jarana is the airline's first permanent CEO since 2015.

The airline has experienced serious financial and governance challenges.

News of Jarana's appointment as SAA CEO was received warmly, with many saying that SAA has hired a turnaround expert with a proven track record of success.

Stephen Grootes spoke to Jarana about his immediate thoughts and plans for SAA.

Really quite encouraging when I listen to the people of SAA very very keen to get the airline back to its own feet again. Employees are quite keen to contribute to its transformation.

Going forward, Jarana says everything is under consideration and every decision must be based on a commercial logic.

The first starting point is to really focus on the commercial delivery of things, your route optimization, you fly the routes that are profitable to you. Every decision must be based on a commercial logic.

Given where we are, we need to really look at revenue optimization stem the tied by cutting costs significantly so those are the big decisions we have to make in a very short space of time.
