You should seek professional help, if you persistently experience at least five of these symptoms for two weeks or longer:
- feelings of sad, helpless or hopeless
- loss of interest in activities that once brought you pleasure
- insomnia or excessive sleeping
- significant weight loss or weight gain
- feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt
- not wanting to move or feeling lethargic
- difficulty concentrating or remembering things
- recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
- fatigue and loss of energy
- physical pain that doesn't respond to medical treatment
He says many people try to mask their depression because of shame and stigma associated with mental illness.
