Gauteng MEC concerned over court ruling to extend shebeen owner licenses

Lebogang Maile, Gauteng’s MEC for Economic, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, is concerned that a recent ruling by the High Court in Johannesburg to extend the permits of shebeen owners will cause an administrative nightmare for the Gauteng Liquor Board.

Last week, the High Court ruled that shebeen permit holders are eligible to trade on their existing permits until the year 2019.

Maile fears there could also be shebeen owners who do not comply with license regulations.

He spoke to Stephen Grootes on 702's Breakfast Show.

There are people who have licenses who don't necessarily qualify.

What this judgment means is that between now and 2019 we must finalise the regulation and process of formalising the shebeen permit holders.

It actually delays us in moving fast with the process of issuing everybody with a license in the province - those that qualify.
