The President's Keepers: PDF version is tantamount to theft - Exclusive Books

CEO of Exclusive Books, Benjamin Trisk has warned that the distribution of a PDF version of The President's Keepers is theft.

Copies of the book have been making rounds on social media after NB Publisher received a cease and desist letter from the State Security Agency, demanding that they withdraw the book from all stores.

Trisk insists Exclusive Books will not recall the book.

He says at least 50 000 copies of the book will be ordered before December.

We are absolutely behind that book and Jacques Pauw with whom I had lunch before I even placed an order four months ago. Between now and the end of December I think the order quantity for the book goes somewhere in the region of 50 000 copies.

Benjamin Trisk, Exclusive Books CEO

The PDF is theft. It is theft from the publisher, the author, ourselves and every other bookseller. I understand the crisis that led to it, people thinking that it wouldn't be available.

Benjamin Trisk, Exclusive Books CEO

He says the bookstore is looking at setting up an online system that will allow those who have accessed the book illegally to compensate the author.

We are looking at setting up an system on our online facility that tells people you have got the book, you have read it, just pay the money, we will treat it as the book sold and we will make payment.

Meanwhile, the South African Communist Party's national spokesperson Alex Mashilo says it worries that the SSA will attempt to ban the book.

This will be remembered as the first case post-1994 where the State took action to ban a book. This will be a reversal of the rights we fought for of freedom of expression as inscribed in our Constitution.

Alex Mashilo, SACP spokesperson
