Catalonia ex-officials freed

Catalonia's former leader Carles Puigdemont and four former ministers have been released under the condition that they cannot leave the country without permission and have had to supply details of their accommodation.

The group handed themselves over to the Belgian police following an EU arrest warrant issued by a Spanish judge.

Puigdemont fled to Belgium after Madrid imposed direct rule on Catalonia, following an independence declaration.

EWN correspondent Gavin Grey says it is uncertain whether he will return to Spain.

Yes, they handed themselves in voluntarily, but now what we are expecting is that within the next fortnight they will reappear in court and then, in theory, Belgium has up to 60 days to return them to Spain.

Already, Carles Puigdemont has said he is only going to return to Spain if he is guaranteed a fair trial.
