More and more people find themselves in hot water for saying the wrong things on social media without intending any harm.
A South African insurance company, SHA Specialist Underwriters, has come up with a way to protect social media users from those kinds of slip-ups. However, racial and cultural issues are excluded from the cover.
Simon Colman, head of commercial liability at SHA Specialist Underwriters says Slip-up Cover is created to provide some comfort to social media users in cases where they inadvertently post something defamatory.
It is important to understand that we are not here to encourage trolling and cyber bulling, in fact those things are excluded by the policy.— Simon Colman, Head of commercial liability at SHA Specialist Underwriters
We cover slip-ups, someone who inadvertently says something... it can even be your kids posting something without thinking and before you know it you have summons and letters of demand from an attorney, that's the kind of incidents that are covered.— Simon Colman, Head of commercial liability at SHA Specialist Underwriters
The policy costs R10 per month and R500 per annum.
