The former Deputy Higher Education Minister pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The sentencing of former deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana has been postponed until Tuesday.

Manana pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm after he was caught on camera assaulting two women outside a Johannesburg nightclub.

Speaking to journalists at the Randburg Magistrate's Court, Manana said he has been quite remorseful and taken responsibility for the incident.

The Commission for Gender Equality says an apology from Mduduzi Manana might be good enough, but justice must be served.

What we want to see is that our judicial system should be put to test, that they uphold the rule of law, that there shall be consistency in issues of gender based violence.

Javu Baloyi, spokesperson of Commission for Gender Equality

He has realised that he has a short fuse, he has looked for remedies to deal with his situation. For someone to acknowledge it, we do not have to be very hypocritical. For us as the Gender Commission, he has been man enough to own up to his mistakes, however, we will want to see justice being affected.
