Santaco says there is no national taxi strike, plans in place for pupils

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in Gauteng have confirmed they are not participating in a taxi strike organised in Pretoria.

Authorities in Tshwane are currently attending to several roads that have been affected by striking taxi drivers.

Members of the South African Taxi Association are calling for the scrapping of traffic fines, a government subsidy amongst other issues.

Stephen Grootes spoke to Santaco's Ralph Jones.

Jones says they have called on law enforcement officials to ensure the safety of commuters and help avoid intimidation.

We have spoken to members to go out and ensure that taxi drivers and commuters are safe on the road, but we have also enlisted the services of law enforcement to be on the look out for negative things that might happen.

Ralph Jones, Santaco Gauteng provincial secretary

He says the issue of government subsidies has been ongoing.

It's an SOS, the subsidy issue has always been on the agenda and nobody is taking cognisance of that.

Meanwhile the Gauteng Education Department says a contingency plans has been put in place to ensure pupils affected by the strike write their exams.

The chief invigilators must assist learners that arrive late and make sure they write, those that will not arrive can go to alternative centers and they will also be assisted there.
