[LISTEN] Ndlozi: Mazzotti donated R200 000 to EFF registration in 2014 election
The EFF has confirmed that controversial cigarette manufacturer Adriano Mazzotti gave the party R200 000 towards registering the party in the 2014 general elections.
EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says the donation is a matter of public record, adding that it is not a new revelation.
This comes after author Jacques Pauw alleged that Mazzotti had close ties to EFF leader Julius Malema in his book.
Ndlozi insists that the party was not aware of Mazzotti's alleged links to the underworld when it accepted party funding from him.
We made a public call for support. Adriano Mazzotti is one of the people that came through for us and gave a donation of R200 000.Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF spokesperson
He assisted us when nobody believed in us and what we were doing at the time.Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF spokesperson
We couldn't have stood in those elections if it wasn't for such help.Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF spokesperson
In 2014, we were not aware of any of these allegations [against Mazzotti].Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF spokesperson
Ndlozi maintains that the EFF has long argued that the deposit required to fight national and provincial elections be scrapped.
He says the party lost their court bid to challenge the exorbitant registration fees required to contest in the 2014 general elections.
In 2014, we went to court to challenge the idea. It's a huge amount of money. We needed close to R500 000.Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF spokesperson
