#TaxiStrike: Transport Minister a no-show as drivers hand over memorandum
Tshwane taxi drivers have gathered at the Transport Department in Pretoria to hand over a memorandum demanding the scraping of traffic fines and a taxi industry subsidy among other things.
Drivers affiliated to the National Taxi Alliance (NAT) staged a massive stay away Wednesday morning, causing traffic disruptions.
Eyewitness News reporter Pelana Phakgadi says while the department's spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi will receive the memorandum, Minister Joe Maswanganyi has not made an appearance.
The NAT has accused Maswanganyi of failing commit to a follow up meeting in October, to address resolve some of it's grievances.
Ishmael Mnisi is the spokesperson for the department. I haven't seen the minister however, he doesn't seem to be here to receive the memorandum.Pelane Phakgadi, EWN reporter
Meanwhile Tshwane Metro Police have confirmed two taxi drivers were arrested for allegedly assaulting a metro police officer during the demonstration.
In Cullinan there were some incidents whereby two taxi drivers assaulted our members. We will at a later stage reveal any other arrests.Isaac Mahamba, Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson
