We are losing a lot with the disappearance of newspapers - Anton Harber

Caxton Chair of Journalism at Wits, Professor Anton Harber says while there is an acknowledgment that newspapers are disappearing, they offer an in-depth perspective of news which cannot be replaced online.

He says more and more people are consuming their news on social media.

Lots of material online is unedited, unselected, unprocessed and unverified which results in a huge phenomenon of fake news.

When you pick up a newspaper that you trust, you know that someone has edited and verified, done a selection on the understanding of their readership.

Social media is fast and immediate, and everyone gets to participate in the discussion. This is the advantage of consuming news online, says Professor Harber.

But newspapers are old and they also provide thoughtfulness, considerateness, a context - and the consideration is that the journalist has set down taken a piece of information and put it into context, explained it to an extent that doesn't happen online.
