Lawyers representing former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu have appeared before the Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearing.
The former MEC has been called on to explain the deaths of more than a hundred fourty one patients. Questions are being asked about the fifty-nine people still missing in the tragedy.
EWN reporter, Masego Rahlaga is at the hearing.
She reports that the latest death toll recorded is at a 143, while 1711 patients were moved from Life Esidimeni in 2015 when the project began that October.
270 of those patients were taken home, leaving them in the care of their families.— Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter
By the time the health ombudsman completed his investigation and report, in February this year- the death recorded reached was 118.— Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter
During February and May 2017 more patients and that 118 became a 139. And in September, four more patients died.— Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter
Rahlaga says Mahlangu's lawyers said the former MEC will be available for testify in January 2018.
