Joe Maswanganyi grilled in Parliament on allegations of state capture at Prasa

Transport Minister, Joe Maswanganyi earlier appeared before Parliament’s Transport Portfolio Committee on Tuesday to discuss allegations of state capture at Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

While the minister said that Prasa is making progress in implementing the remedial action proposed by the Public Protector, the parastatals interim board, failed to turn up for their first appearance before Parliament.

Lindsay Dentlinger, EWN reporter, was in Parliament.

She reports that there has been no board at Prasa for the last three months, adding that an interim board was only appointed three weeks ago.

In that time, forensic investigations and reports still have to be processed.

There's a major investigation by Werksmans Attorneys that has already cost the agency R148 million.

Dentlinger reports that there is a further R25 million being paid to National Treasury for an investigation of over a hundred contracts.

She goes on to say the minister took the committee through the Public Protector's report about the remedial action that was directed at the ministry, to ensure it was done.

Dentlinger explains that Maswanganyi wasn't able to provide specifics on the number of officials that may face disciplinary action.

The interim board only consists of about six members right now.

Only one member sent an apology excusing herself from the meeting adds Dentlinger.

The focus really today focused on the remedial action proposed by the Public Protector.
