Let's visit August House - the playground of artists

Once a light industrial building, and now a remnant of Doornfontein’s industrial past, August House has developed into an art hub and home to some of South Africa’s most talented artists.

Housing more than 50 artists from all over the continent in private studio spaces in this inner city five-story 1940s industrial structure.

Traditionally at August House, ‘Open Studio’ exhibitions have provided a stage for art followers and buyers to meet and get to know artists in their private art studio spaces.

The hub gives art lovers the opportunity to purchase art directly from the artists at affordable prices – a great opportunity for locals to collect and invest in local contemporary art.

These Open Studio days happen two to three times a year, aiming to afford creatives a platform outside of major institutions.

Kate Ballenden, manager of August House says the Open Studio days is a great opportunity to explore investment art without the frills of gallery formalities.

“Meeting the artists personally in their studio spaces gives buyers a behind-the-scenes look at where the art is created, a better sense of the creative process and a personal encounter with the creator of the artwork on sale,” she says.

Art lovers can expect to find a cross-section of pan-African contemporary art, from photography to printmaking, digital art, charcoal drawing, smoke drawing, sculpting, installations, and videography.

To experience August House, visit its FaceBook page or website for more details.
