Rape crisis counsellors estimate that only 1 in 50 raped women report this crime to the police, but the rates of under-reporting are even higher among men.
CapeTalk presenter Sara-Jayne King speaks to Derek who is a survivor of childhood sex abuse and a member of the organisation Sex Survivors Anonymous.
The organisation was established so that survivors can share their stories, and help one another in process of healing from abuse.
Talking to Sara-Jayne, Derek says he was sexually abused by a neighbour when he was 6-years-old.
From my experience, I just felt I was so contaminated by this shame and prayed that no one would ever know about this even though intellectually I knew I was a child and I had no responsibility for this.— Derek
The depressed memories of the abuse started haunting Derek at the age of 42 to a point where he couldn't cope and had to find help.
