President Jacob Zuma appointed Bongumusa Makhathini – a Harvard Business School graduate – as the SABC Chairperson in October.
At the time of his appointment he chaired first lady Bongi Ngema's foundation which, needless to say, raised a few eyebrows.
He has since resigned from the foundation to prevent a conflict of interest.
Makhathini is also a director (Legal and External Affairs) at British American Tobacco.
Some interesting facts about Makhathini:
His first job was as farmworker in the sugarcane fields of Empangeni, where he earned R1.50 per day.
- His uncle gave him the nickname “Ayilali Ikhonjiwe”, which means something like “Once I’ve set my mind on something, I go for it full force”.
