Meet Bongumusa Makhathini, Chairperson of the Board that has to save the SABC

I’m of the view that South Africans hate corruption.

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

The situation there [SABC] is quite dire.

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

I’m not friends with the President.

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

President Jacob Zuma appointed Bongumusa Makhathini – a Harvard Business School graduate – as the SABC Chairperson in October.

At the time of his appointment he chaired first lady Bongi Ngema's foundation which, needless to say, raised a few eyebrows.

He has since resigned from the foundation to prevent a conflict of interest.

Makhathini is also a director (Legal and External Affairs) at British American Tobacco.

Some interesting facts about Makhathini:

  • His first job was as farmworker in the sugarcane fields of Empangeni, where he earned R1.50 per day.

  • His uncle gave him the nickname “Ayilali Ikhonjiwe”, which means something like “Once I’ve set my mind on something, I go for it full force”.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Makhathini for his “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

We’ve got to roll up our sleeves and do something about the situation in our country.

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

There’s been good appointments by the President… Thuli Madonsela … Mogoeng Mogoeng…

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

[We need] the right executives at the helm of the SABC.

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

I haven’t had any politicians calling me…

Bongumusa Makhathini, SABC

It [the appointment of a new CEO] cant’ be done within a month.
