How a divorce can cause a dark Christmas for your kids

Founder and Director of the Family Counselling Centre, Andrea Nettle specialises with individuals, couples and families who experience trauma.

On the #WeekendBreakfast with Sara-Jayne King, Nettle provided insight into dealing with the trauma of a divorce during the festive season, and ways to assist children during the process.

The biggest problem with families who have experienced a split during the festive season, is the emotional turmoil that each family is going through says Nettle. She adds that it’s important to hold the kids in such a way, that their life continues as per usual.

If your family traditions have been in a certain way, allow them to have those same traditions, with small tweaks to accommodate the separation of the parent.

Nettle says that an example of this would be having Christmas dinner with one parent, and Christmas morning with another. Nettle highlights that there needs to be communication between the parents which could be hard.

I'm always one to advocate honesty. Trying to have a Christmas together when the hearts are broken, and there's anguish and anger lingering in the room, kids can pick that up very quickly.
